Easter is termed a moveable feast because it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar. Easter falls at some point between late March and late April each year, following the cycle of the moon. Easter always falls on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25 inclusively. The following day, Easter Monday, is a legal holiday in many countries with predominantly Christian traditions.

Easter in Czech Republic and Slovakia

In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, a tradition of spanking or whipping is carried out on Easter Monday. In the morning, men spank women with a special handmade whip called a pomlázka (in Czech) or korbáč (in Slovak), or, in eastern Moravia and Slovakia, throw cold water on them. The spanking normally is not painful or intended to cause suffering. A legend says that women should be spanked in order to keep their health and beauty during whole next year. Traditionally, the spanked woman gives a coloured egg and sometimes a small amount of money to the man as a sign of her thanks.

Easter is the most important religious feast in the Christian liturgical year. Christians believe that Jesus was resurrected from the dead 2 days after his crucifixion, and celebrate resurrection on Easter Day, or Easter Sunday, two days after Good Friday. Many cultural elements, such as the Easter Bunny, have become part of the holiday's modern celebrations, and those aspects are often celebrated by many Christians and non-Christians alike.
